We made these Earth lights two years ago to celebr We made these Earth lights two years ago to celebrate Earth Day.⠀
⠀
The world feels vastly different today! But the Earth keeps on going, with or without us, regardless of the quantity or type of 120nm particles floating around our environment or in us. The flowers are blooming, the trees are full of fresh growth, and in a positive development, our carbon emissions have sharply declined as we do our best to slow the spread of this pandemic while we ramp up testing capacity, medical treatment, and vaccine development. ⠀
⠀
We hope that all of us people of the Earth are able to remain as healthy and safe as possible during this time and that we're able to do our best to be good stewards of the planet that we all share.
The making of this photo (M232R shown): This one w The making of this photo (M232R shown): This one we managed to do with just a single person. Michael commented on our last image about how he set up his kickstand, set his e-bike throttle on and then used his phone's shutter delay. For this photo, I did the following: I set up the camera on a tripod, and changed the exposure settings as appropriate. I tied a tiny string around the handlebars and attached it to the ceiling to get the front wheel just barely off of the ground. The plan was to spin the wheel then run back to press the shutter button and see how things looked. First spin: the string snaps and the bike falls over. It was kind of funny and kind of annoying. I went to get a stronger string and hung the bike from two strings to reduce the tension. This time the strings didn't snap, and after a few pendulum-y tries that resulted in motion blur, I finally started getting some decent images.
A bit on the backstory behind this photo: We neede A bit on the backstory behind this photo: We needed to do a photo shoot for our new-at-the-time M232. We set up 2 bicycles with lights, brought spare lights, batteries, zip ties and cutters for installation, camera equipment and a bucket for water. We drove and rode a short distance to Berkeley Aquatic Park and found a suitable spot on the path. As you may know, taking a photo of the lights is difficult because the wheel needs to be spinning to see the persistence of vision effect. I don't remember if we had 3 or 4 people, but we had one person working the camera, another person holding the bike wheel just off the ground, and a third person whose job it was to spin the wheel. We had also built a special pedal that we attached a few blocks of 2x4s to to help prop the bike wheel off the ground. We found a suitable location, used the bucket to get some water from the lagoon and poured it onto the pavement to get that nice reflection off of the pavement. The wheel spinning person spun the wheel while the bike-holding person held up the wheel, the camera person pressed the shutter. If everything worked out ok and the flashes were set at the right power, we could get a nice sharp image with a wheel full of color. It took a few hours and we didn't finish until near midnight and in the end were able to take home a few images that we'd be able to use for a long time.
